Unproductive Behaviors Writing Workshop
Unproductive Behaviors Writing Workshop
This writing circle for queer-identified people focuses on generating new work of any genre. We will write and revise in community through the 100s method popularized by feminist scholars like Lauren Berlant and Dr. Kim Tall Bear. The 100s asks each participant to write 100 words a day on an assigned day of the week. Participants write in one shared document where they can see and take momentum from each other’s work. During the week, writers will be given an optional prompt and are expected to write 100 words on their given day. When the group gathers we will review each other’s writing, discuss the process of generating together, and support each other as we explore ways to take our fragments further. This workshop is titled ‘unproductive behaviors’ because it is dedicated to generating work without adhering to ideals of productivity that harry writers to push out word counts or tangible products. By depending on a group of writers to generate in concert (akin to singing in the round), the 100s process invites us to dally in the process. Fee: $120 per person Dates: 5-7pm Mondays for 6 weeks. Jan 8 – Feb 12 Scholarship: two free spots open for…

The Great Disconnect
Join us for a screening of the documentary The Great Disconnect. We are living in a time that has been described as the age of loneliness. Despite Western advances in technology, living conditions, education and healthcare we—as a society—are isolating ourselves from one another, and because of this, facing a health crisis that affects all ages, genders, races and cultures. But how have we become so disconnected? And what can we do to change the status quo and fulfill our potential for health and well-being? Follow wellness expert Tamer Soliman as he journeys through North American cities to meet with local citizens, community activists, and leading authorities on social, economic, and urban planning to discover the true factors that have profound and lasting impacts, not only on our health, but the health of the communities in which we live. This timely documentary invites us to reflect on the relationships we have with those around us and raises the question: is it possible to overcome our modern culture of disconnectedness and rediscover how truly essential we are to one other? Documentary to be followed by a discussion. This is not a hybrid event—however, individuals can register to watch the documentary online…

In Hell of a Book, a Black author sets out on a cross-country publicity tour to promote his bestselling novel. That storyline drives Hell of a Book and is the scaffolding of something much larger and more urgent: Mott’s novel also tells the story of Soot, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past, and The Kid, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour. As these characters’ stories build and converge, they astonish. While this heartbreaking and magical book entertains and is at once about family, love of parents and children, art and money, it’s also about the nation’s reckoning with a tragic police shooting playing over and over again on the news. And with what it can mean to be Black in America. Unforgettably told, with an electrifying plot and characters who burn into your mind, Hell of a Book is the novel Mott has been writing in his head for the last ten years. And in its final twists, it truly becomes its…

Join us at the Greenfield Public Library on Wednesday, February 21 at 5:30 pm as we celebrate Black History month with the documentary Cathedral 1976, by filmmaker Don Wright. Cathedral 1976 looks at how a 10 year old in Boston’s South End was changed by busing and the lasting effects felt nearly 50 years later. Directed by local filmmaker Don Wright, Cathedral 1976 is one assessment of race and racism, including people from the Greenfield community and their work navigating the tension between systemic racism and the choices it brings about with lived experiences. Don Wright, filmmaker and active in the local recovery community for the past seven years, lives in Greenfield. This program, generously sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, is free and open to everyone in our community.

Virtual Author Talk with Kim Scott
Virtual Author Talk with Kim Scott
Why is feedback so difficult, and how can we make it easier? The idea is simple: You don't have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk. Kim Scott, New York Times bestselling author of Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity, will explain the Radical Candor feedback framework and how you can practice it today. She'll offer practical, tactical tips for how to solicit criticism, give praise and criticism, gauge how what you're saying is landing, and build a culture of Radical Candor. She'll also discuss ensuring that bias, prejudice, and bullying don't masquerade as feedback. For more information, and to register for these and other upcoming talks, go to https://libraryc.org/greenfieldpubliclibrary This program, brought to you by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium, is free and open to the public.

Beyond the Brain: Soul Exhaustion & Soul Care
Beyond the Brain: Soul Exhaustion & Soul Care
Throughout the history of humanity and within every known culture has been the concept of the soul—and yet over the last century or so, its value has lost much ground. For many people the idea of the soul, the essence of “who” they are resonates deeply and yet has been significantly diminished by the medical model of mental health and addiction. This presentation will bring the concept of the soul back to the forefront of discussion in how we conceptualize ourselves and others as well as the concept of soul exhaustion. Soul exhaustion takes a deeper exploration of life circumstances such as poverty, adverse childhood experiences, racism, trauma, loss and burnout and the holistic impact it has on “who” we are. When looking through the lens of soul exhaustion, we also must shift our thoughts on solutions to address the soul, spirit or essence of “who” we are. Soul care, which has emphasis on non-clinical resources, goes deeper into understanding the ways in which we care for the “who.” This presentation also explores how the concept of Soul Exhaustion and Soul Care can work in harmony with the medical model of mental health, substance use disorders and suicide prevention. Presented…
