Life Behind the Lens: Selected Stories from 40 Years in the Movie Industry with Mike Haley

Greenfield Community College One College Drive, Greenfield, MA, United States

Celebrate the opening of GCC's fall theater production of "Angels in America" with Hollywood veteran Mike Haley, assistant director of HBO’s television adaptation of the Tony and Pulitzer award-winning play. Mike Haley has worked on over 60 feature films and 18 television movies and has worked with some of American’s greatest directors including Sidney Lumet, Sidney Pollock, Barry Levinson, Penny Marshall, Harold Ramis, and Mike Nichols. His relationship with Nichols spans 30 years and 13 films including "Biloxi Blues," "Working Girl," "Primary Colors," "Angels In America," and "Charlie Wilson’s War." He’s also worked with actors and actresses including Katherine Hepburn, Harrison Ford, Meryl Streep, Madonna, and Morris the Cat. He’s had a prolific career as an actor in roles opposite Sophia Loren, Christian Slater and John Travolta and played the umpire who throws Tom Hanks out of the game after the classic “There’s no crying in baseball!” scene in "A League Of Their Own." Mike has received two Humanitas Prizes, The Christopher Award, a Directors Guild of American citation and an Emmy for his work on "Angels in America." As we prepare to welcome Angels to GCC theater, we are excited to have Mr. Haley in person to share stories…

The Loneliness Project

Greenfield Community College One College Drive, Greenfield, MA, United States

GCC and community partners host a series of public conversations about loneliness and its impact on Franklin County residents—our community, our schools, our human service organizations, our faith-based institutions, our health care providers, and our lives. In May of 2023 U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy declared loneliness a public health epidemic: "Our epidemic of loneliness and isolation has been an underappreciated public health crisis that has harmed individual and societal health." Loneliness increases the likelihood of premature death by 26%; 71% of adolescents and young adults report experiencing loneliness versus 50% for those 80 and older; and evidence suggests loneliness contributes significantly to mental health problems, particularly depression and anxiety. It has even been surmised that loneliness has an impact on our capacity to function as a democracy. As the political divide grows and loneliness peaks, our lack of connection makes us less likely to connect with those who have different points of view—and as we seek to put our arms around the scope of this challenge, we will wrestle with appropriate responses, strategies and solutions. Free and open to the public; please note additional sessions on Friday, October 20, 12-1pm at the J.W. Olver Transit Center and Thursday,…
