Local Authors at the GPL: Joan Livingston
Local Authors at the GPL: Joan Livingston
The Greenfield Public Library welcomes local author Joan Livingston on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:00 pm, to discuss her seventh novel in the Isabel Long Mystery Series, Missing the Deadline. Joan Livingston, author of novels for adult and young readers, is a longtime journalist who worked her way up from being a correspondent paid by the inch to editor-in-chief for award-winning newspapers in Western Massachusetts and New Mexico. Her most recent gig was top editor for the Greenfield Recorder, Athol Daily News, and Daily Hampshire Gazette. She left journalism in 2022 to concentrate on writing fiction. Livingston draws upon her own experience as a journalist to create Isabel Long, a sassy, savvy widow who uses the skills she acquired in the same business to solve cold cases in the fictional hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. She relies on her deep knowledge of rural Western Mass., where she lives in Buckland, to create realistic characters and settings. Most of her 14 books published thus far are set in that part of the state. She is currently working on the eighth in her mystery series plus a young adult novel. Copies of her book will be available for purchase. This event is free…

Join The LAVA Center for live music with members of The Frost Heaves & HaLeS during May’s Greenfield Arts Walk! The Frost Heaves & HaLeS have been crafting confections you eat with your ears ever since erupting from the wilds of Western Massachusetts in 2005. More than just a gig, every Heaves show is an occasion. The band’s performances have incorporated poetry readings, video projection, theater, breakdancing action figures and more. The band’s songbook includes some 100 original tunes and more than three dozen covers — many of them written or selected for special occasions like movie screenings and tribute nights. Visit their website here. Performing in May will be singer and guitarist Daniel Hales and and bassist James Lowe. $5-10 suggested donation ($1-2 Card to Culture). Band leader Daniel Hales is an inventive poet, songwriter, singer, and strummer equally at home performing solo. Daniel’s lyrics have frequently been singled out for praise. Northeast Performer wrote, “Hales artfully plays with the duality of words in the English language, creating lyrics that are both smart and memorable.” Impact Press called Daniel’s lyrics “nothing short of brilliant.” Bassist James Lowe masterminds many of the song arrangements, layering string, horn, keyboard and drum…

Virtual Author Talk with Matt Shindell
Mars and its secrets have fascinated and mystified humans since ancient times. Due to its vivid color and visibility, its geologic kinship with Earth, and its potential as our best hope for settlement, Mars embodies everything that inspires us about space and exploration. For the Love of Mars surveys the red planet's place in the human imagination, beginning with ancient astrologers and skywatchers and ending in our present moment of exploration and virtual engagement. You’re invited to come learn alongside Matt Shindell, National Air and Space Museum curator, as he introduces viewers to historical figures across eras and around the world who have made sense of this mysterious planet. By focusing on the diverse human stories behind the telescopes and behind the robots we know and love, Shindell will show how Mars exploration has evolved in ways that have also expanded knowledge about other facets of the universe. Mystery Readers Book Club
Join us at the GPL for a different type of Book Club, hosted by Karen Larsen, on the first Wednesday of each month! Because we each have our own tastes in mysteries we don’t ask everyone to read the same book each month. Instead we get together in a casual friendly environment and talk about what we’ve each been reading individually. Whether your thing is country cozies, dark Scandinavian noir, serial killer thrillers, historical whodunnits, spy drama, fantasy conundrums, or another branch of the genre, we’ll enjoy your insights into what you are reading. This is a guilt free book club! Didn’t have time to read anything this month?- no problem. It’s fine to just come and enjoy the discussion, and you may have insights into the books others have read. Didn’t like the book or books you read? It’s interesting to hear about that too. Looking for new authors? This book club is a great way to find them. When there’s time we also talk about mysteries on Film and TV. Karen will bring a snack and you bring your unique interests and insights. We look forward to meeting you for a fun discussion!
