Reading for Change: A Community Read Project
Greenfield Public Library 412 Main St, Greenfield, MA, United StatesJoin Greenfield Community College and The Greenfield Public Library on Thursday, September 22, at 6 pm, for the virtual Kick Off of the 2nd Annual Reading for Change: A Community Read Project. This fall we are reading Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work by Dave Isay, the founder of StoryCorps. Callings is a fascinating, edited, collection of interviews organized around the theme of work, emphasizing “stories of passion, courage, and commitment, following individuals as they pursue the work they were born to do.” Because of its focus on storytelling, careers, meaning, purpose, and creating a life that is worth living, Callings has wide-ranging applications for a variety of contexts. As part of the Reading for Change program there will be three virtual community events, starting with the virtual Kickoff Event on September 22. The event will include introductions, an overview of the project and a discussion about the importance of considering our relationship to work at this historical moment. Copies of the book are available at the Greenfield Public Library. Since bandleader Matthew Shippee took a five year hiatus from concerts to focus on raising kiddos, the band has been returning to area stages in varied configurations with Kirk Sanger on bass, new original songs, and an assortment of guitar pedals for interpreting Gypsy Jazz and vocal jazz standards. This regular gig also features fabulous guest musicians associated with the GCC Music Department where Matthew is faculty and chair of the Contemporary Music Studies program. After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret.
