LAVA Film Festival- 4th annual

All films were made by current residents of Massachusetts — with more than half of them hailing from Western Mass. Join us for a weekend of celebrating 5 years of community arts, theater, literature, storytelling, comedy, music, film, photography, history, humanities and more in downtown Greenfield. Our celebration coincides with Greenfield’s Winter Carnival, just as our grand opening did in 2020. All events are FREE to attend — donations are gladly welcome to help support future LAVA programming! Friday, Jan. 31 5–8pm: Exhibit launch and reception: “History of LAVA: Memorabilia and Photography” On Friday night, we will launch our exhibit for the month of February, a display of memorabilia and photos depicting the growth of the arts at The LAVA Center over the past five years. Staff has compiled an exhibit of programming and growing at the center. Come hear the band, see the exhibit, have a bite to eat, make some art and share stories of your experiences with the staff and volunteers. We’re excited to see you. 5–7pm: Art making table for kids and grownups with Jovonna Van Pelt 6–8pm: live music with Vimana Vimana is an experimental rock trio with Brian Rodriguez on bass, Bruce Todd on drums and Leo Hwang on guitar. New England Dreamscapes: new paintings on slate by Sarah Adam

Sarah is a visual artist specializing in painted landscapes on mixed media, utilizing acrylic paint on repurposed materials, including found slate stone and reclaimed wood. She is also an accomplished illustrator, creating whimsical worlds for all audiences with delightful children’s books and playful greeting cards.
Sweet Spirit + A Balm in Gilead musical extravaganza weekend
Second Congregational Church 16 Court SquareThe LAVA Center is thrilled to announce a collaboration with Música Franklin, Twice as Smart and Dr. Arthur C. Jones, founder of The Spirituals Project (Denver, CO), in two programs focused on the power of the Spirituals to help us learn, grow and heal together. On Saturday, March 29, 2 p.m., the youth of Música Franklin and Twice as Smart will present Sweet Spirit: Songs of Joy, Peace, and Freedom, a program of vocal music under the leadership of Orice Jenkins and Gloria Matlock, with Dr. Jones joining Ms. Matlock in providing commentary on the history and significance of the songs. On Sunday, March 30, 4 p.m. LAVA will present A Balm in Gilead: Songs of Resilience, Hope, and Healing. The Sunday program features Dr. Jones presenting a multi-media discussion of the history and meaning of the Spirituals, with music by Twice as Smart youth and a LAVA Community Choir — an ad hoc choir of any and all who love to sing together. Adam Matlock, music director, will lead the Community Choir in songs that illustrate key themes in Dr. Jones’s talk: Communal Identity, Welcoming & Inclusiveness, Covert Communication, and Contemplative Spirituality.
