About This Event

Wrapping up our First Monday Silent Film Series with support from The Sunrise Foundation and the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival 1923’s The Ancient Law with live music from renowned musicians David Sosin (Keyboards) and Alicia Svigals (Violin).

Starring Frieda Ulricke “Henny” Porten, Ruth Weyher, Herman Vallentin and Avrom Morewski this beautiful German silent film directed by film pioneer E.A. Dupont focuses on the son of an Orthodox Rabbi facing hostility from his father when he decides he wants to be an actor breaking with family tradition and leaving the shtetl. Think of it as the Fiddler on the Roof of 1923.

Henny Porten was one of the most renown German actresses and successfully transitioned into talking films. She was married to a Jewish Doctor and refused to divorce upon the rise of Nazism and saw her 12 film a year theatrical career immediately dissolve. She made over 170 films between 1906 and 1955.

About the PVJFF

Founded in 2004 and presented by the Springfield Jewish Community Center, the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival proudly continues its tradition of showcasing award-winning films from around the world. Join us for a multifaceted cinematic exploration of Jewish identity, community and history!

Typically, our diverse lineup of films are screened in festive venues across Western Massachusetts. In 2021 and 2022, we pivoted to virtual programming. We’re pleased to share that we’ll return in-person in 2023! As always, PVJFF is a unique opportunity for community dialogue, both within and outside of the Jewish community.

Year after year, PVJFF presents critically acclaimed films that not only entertain, but also provide opportunities for reflection, discussion, and a deeper understanding of our complex, diverse world. Film screenings and accompanying programs aim to illuminate universal themes such as identity and belonging, conflict and reconciliation in the Middle East, social justice and civic engagement.

We are thrilled to celebrate our 17th year of bringing educational, entertaining and thought-provoking Jewish-themed films to the Pioneer Valley community. See you at the movies!
