Drop-In Tech Help with Tech Foundry, GPL Conference Room Friday, September 13, 27, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm Do you need help using your computer, tablet, or smartphone? Come to a drop-in tech help session! Leon from Tech Foundry will be at the Library on Friday, September 13 and 21 to help you with your tech issues. Drop in between 11:30 am - 1:30 pm on either day with your device, or use a library laptop. Tech Foundry stands as Western Massachusetts' premier IT workforce development non-profit, fostering collaboration among residents, employers, and community partners to empower individuals with digital literacy skills and secure living wage jobs. Their programs include a tuition-free IT support training program, and “Tech Hub”, which provides digital literacy and computer training; these programs work to help Massachusetts residents and organizations thrive in today's digital landscape. Western Massachusetts Master Gardeners Association Information Session & Soil Testing

  Saturday, September 14, 21,  10:00 am - 12:00 pm, Front Patio The Western Massachusetts Master Gardener Association (WMMGA) will be at the Greenfield Public Library to answer questions and offer pH soil testing . Bring a sample of soil to learn what your garden needs to flourish! For information on collecting soil samples , see “How to Test Your Soil” on their homepage at https://wmmga.org/ The Western Massachusetts Master Gardener Association (WMMGA) is a member- managed nonprofit organization dedicated to the educational mission of promoting good and sustainable gardening practices. Each Master Gardener has completed an in-depth training program, including hands-on activities in gardening and public education, and has made a commitment to participate in WMMGA-sponsored public programs each year. WMMGA is an Affiliate of the national Master Gardener program of the American Horticultural Society. This program, free and open to the public, is a rain or shine event.

Stop by to learn how to book appointments,  pick up safer-sex supplies, and other Tapestry swag! Tapestry is a human services organization that focuses on sexual health. They believe that access to compassionate, accurate, high-quality healthcare should be available to everyone. Tapestry provides safe spaces in all four counties of Western Mass where anyone can receive the care they need without fear of judgment or stigma. This program is free and open to everyone in our community.

The Day After Yesterday: Portraits of Dementia Reception with Joe Wallace

GPL welcomes Joe Wallace  to discuss his book The Day After Yesterday: Resilience in the Face of Dementia and the portraits that have been hanging in the library over the summer.  Trained as a journalist, Joe Wallace has been a portrait photographer and storyteller for twenty years. Like many, Joe has a deeply personal connection with dementia. His maternal grandfather and hero, Joe Jenkins, had Alzheimer’s. His maternal grandmother Elizabeth Ponder (Bebe) had vascular dementia. And in recent years, his mother Barbara (seen here together) has begun her journey with the disease. Joe was frustrated by the common, one-dimensional narrative of dementia—futility, despair, and loss. These are real and important elements of the dementia journey, but by focusing only on the narrowest of views, do very little to change the stigma of those living with the disease. In many ways, showing the stereotypical perspectives only makes it easier to continue ignoring the burgeoning health crisis and the individuals themselves. Joe feels strongly that to give the audience courage to act in ways large and small, you must show the whole story. Starting on March 5, Massachusetts Primary Election Day, and continuing throughout this year’s election season, stop by the Greenfield Public Library’s Local History Room on Tuesdays to copy and reflect on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Take a break from the hectic, often frenzied, election news coverage to study, reflect, and increase your understanding of our rights as citizens of the United States.   Copies of the documents and writing materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own! This program is free and open to everyone in our community.

Stop by the Greenfield Public Library on Tuesday, September 17, and pick up a free Pocket Constitution, offered in observance of Constitution Day.  Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on September 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.  Registration is not required, but supplies are limited: one copy per person will be available on a first come, first served basis. The Pocket Constitutions, made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, are free and available to the public.

Drop by the GPL to learn more about the opportunities at GCC on Tuesday, September 17, from 10:00 - 11:30 am.  An admission representative will be on hand with information about the MassReconnect Program, and the NEW Masseducate program.   The MassEducate and MassReconnect programs allow all Massachusetts residents who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree to attend a Massachusetts community college for free. Sean Kelleher, Greenfield’s SWIFR Recycling Outreach Coordinator, will be at the Greenfield Public Library  to provide information and answer questions about the City’s new recycling program. Greenfield is rolling out a new recycling program in 2025! Switching to automated single stream recycling collection, all recyclables, including cardboard, will go into one large cart—no more sorting! These new carts are on wheels and super easy to push to the curb on recycling days. To hear more information about this recycling transition stop by and learn all about how it works! This Information Session is free and intended for Greenfield residents.
