Doug Selwyn, editor of At the Center of All Possibilities: Transforming Education for Our Children’s Future, explores the question “What education do our children need to be best prepared for their unpredictable future?” Educating our young is one of the primary responsibilities of any society so that they are ready and able to meet the (by definition) unpredictable future they are growing into, ready to step up as the actors and decision-makers in their communities as the current elder generation ages out of those roles. As we look at public education across the nation it is clear that it is failing—by almost any measure—as we refuse to face and act on crisis after crisis, be it climate or pandemic, and exhibit a willingness to leave critical thinking at the door. This workshop begins with a summary of Selwyn’s research with educators and activists around the country regarding the question; how can we help our young people learn what they need to know and be able to do if they are to survive and thrive, as individuals, in communities, and on a healthy planet? Following presentation of the research, participants will together explore the central and strategize around local, state and…
Join us for an entertaining virtual chat with author Bonnie Garmus as she discusses her debut New York Times bestselling novel Lessons in Chemistry, set in 1960’s California, featuring the singular voice of Chemist Elizabeth Zott, a scientist whose career takes an unexpected detour. It begins in the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Zott soon finds herself at the helm of a cooking show. "Welcome to the 1960s, where a woman’s arsenal of tools was often limited to the kitchen—and where Elizabeth Zott is hellbent on overturning the status quo one meal at a time.” For more information, and to register for this and other upcoming talks, go to https://libraryc.org/greenfieldpubliclibrary/21486/register This program, brought to you by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium, is free and open to the public.

NEW MONUMENTS (DON DIETRICH (BORBETOMAGUS) - SAX/BEN HALL - PERCUSSION/CAMILLE DIETRICH - CELLO/TONY GORDON - BASS) LEMUEL MARC (SOLO TRUMPET) OWEN MANURE BYRON COLEY (WORDS) DJ REC New Monuments is touring in support of "Language is the Skin" the fourth full length release by the group which is co-led by Don Dietrich (Borbetomagus) and Ben Hall (Graveyards/Bill Dixon). Hall and Dietrich continue applying pressure to the structure of the relationship between saxophone and percussion. "Language" branches out to include totally new forms, line-ups, and instrumentation. New to the band, replacing C. Spencer Yeh, are Don's 25 year-old shredder daughter Camille adding 'cello, big Stockhausian refrigerator drags (the apple don't fall far from...) as well as Atlanta free music sorcerer Tony Gordon on electric bass bringing that Jamaaladeen as inhabited by broken A.I. Hall, for his part, restructures the rhythm away from any post-Lifetime power trio mechanics using concert percussion, MPC, and bits of concrète. While Borbeto has played less, Don has not stopped bringing more rigor and increasing complexity to his sound producing a density that is absolutely feral and totally obsessed/enthralled with its own forward momentum. Together, the band has thoroughly escaped its own captivity and sideways reliance on…

Master Banjo players at Hawks and Reed! Tony Trischka // Michael Nix at Hawks and Reed Fri, Dec 2, 2022 7:30 PM POSTPONED FROM SEPT 3RD "Tony Trischka is known as the father of modern bluegrass" - NY Times. Tony was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1949, and raised in a home filled with music. There were Broadway scores and a sweeping range of classical music, from Stravinsky to Beethoven. (The first thing Trischka learned to play on the banjo, in fact, was the Ninth Symphony.) The wide- open American vistas of Aaron Copland had an especially potent spiritual and visceral impact on him, as did the folk music his left-leaning father held dear. The Almanac Singers, the solo work of its founding members Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and Lead Belly’s children’s LP were in constant rotation. Trischka fell in love with the banjo by way of the Kingston Trio’s 1959 recording of “M.T.A.,” and was able to experience the New York-centered folk revival by trekking to the Newport Folk Festival in the early to mid-’60s. He moved to the city in the early ’70s and hit the ground running, settling in among a peer group of extraordinary musicians…
