Artist Statement: Spiritually, I believe that we are all connected: to each other, nature and the earth we inhabit. Recent work at MIT discovered the fertilization of an egg creates familiar patterns “similar to the waves generated in other, seemingly unrelated systems, such as the vortices in quantum fluids, the circulations in the atmosphere and oceans, and the electrical signals that propagate through the heart and brain.” (source) Who knew, except perhaps Buddha? As a painter, I am fascinated and challenged by these patterns in nature, such as the skin of a pineapple in a bowl of fruit, the nautilus shell on a beach or the fractal design of branches in a tree. Challenged to create accurate representation, I discovered Sacred Geometry and my journey began. I started studying the Seed Of Life and continued into fractals, Islamic geocentric patterns and other sequences. I was also inspired by artists, such as Steven Meakin, who was creating large mandalas with interesting and unusual shapes and colors. Once I started painting this series of eight, it became my daily meditation practice. The paintings themselves, done in casein paint, take a life of their own, the end result different than what I initially…

Looky There is an exhibition of risograph-printed photographs by Trevor Powers. The images, all shot on color 35mm film, are printed as 3-4 color risograph prints. Taken in and around western Massachusetts, the photographs explore the color, pattern, and texture of both organic and manmade objects and scenes, while also examining the generative process of how analog images are created and transformed into tangible objects. Their final form is a limited-color, layered risograph print, far from the original creation: a 35mm color negative with sharp focus and an unlimited range of colors. In both stages, the artist’s eye and the creative and mechanical process are visible and ingrained in the final object. Created over four printing sessions at Looky Here, the work in this exhibition also aims to highlight the invaluable creative asset that Looky Here is for the local community – a place where new skills are learned and creative exploration is pushed within a supportive environment centered on self-expression and collaboration. Accompanying the series of prints is a handbound artists’ book featuring the riso prints, a free zine, and editioned prints for sale.

The LAVA Center shares two provocative and inspiring TED Talks from the artist JR at the next Theater of Ideas, Friday, April 17. Doors open at 5 p.m. for gallery viewing. At 6:30 p.m., the screenings begin, followed by audience discussion and who knows? Maybe more world-changing ideas will hatch in those moments. JR began his career on the streets of Paris as a graffiti artist, leaving his mark on rooftops and subway cars. When he found a camera he began documenting his adventures, and taking pictures of his friends in Les Bosquets, a housing project in the Paris suburbs. He pasted photocopies on outside wall spaces and pasted frames around the images, creating an open-air gallery. His work celebrates the marginalized and invisible through portrait photography enlarged to cover entire buildings, neighborhoods and even whole towns. “In the street,” he is quoted as saying, “we reach people who never go to museums.” In 2011 he won the $100,000 TED Prize, and used the money to launch “Inside Out Project,” facilitating thousands of people around the world exploring his method, documenting their communities through oversized portraits pasted on public walls. During the course of his career so far, he has…
