On the Boards New Play Fest: “The Plan” + “Narrow House: Dreams to Let”
Get a glimpse into the process of making theater, in this festival of readings of new works in several stages of development. “The Plan” written by PH Crosby directed by Tracy Grammer performed by Kendra Corrie, Katie Hertel, Ashley Kramer, Priscilla Mollard, and Maya Quinones Five sisters come together after their mother’s death, ostensibly to make decisions about the family home and her belongings. But we see deeper and larger forces at work as their situations emerge. “Narrow House: Dreams to Let” written by Konrad Rogowski directed by Charlene Kennedy performed by Jeremy Ebersole, Joanne Graves, Justin (Ryn) Griffin, Nathan Haugh, Elizabeth LaPrade, Brandon Williams, and Nicole Winot The fragments of a 1938 radio broadcast and the unexpected arrival of a pregnant young woman throw the lives of the five tenants of Narrow House into chaos.

LAVA’s third annual festival of new plays by (mostly) local playwrights will include new and developmental works by ten Massachusetts-based playwrights and five LAVA friends from further afield. Get a glimpse into the process of making theater, in this festival of readings of new works in several stages of development. “Aananda” written by Sasha Aronson directed by Cynthia Claudio performed by Lundy Bancroft, Hia Ghosh, Justin (Ryn) Griffin, Lindel Hart, and Christine Mirabel The play takes place during a Social Studies lesson in the year 33 A.A. (After Ascension). Guided by The Teacher, the class reflects on the conventions of the present epoch while studying a period in history known as the “Great Shift” which took place during the final years of the Anthropocene; rapidly over the course of the years 2020-2050 A.D. / B.A. (Before Ascension). “The Greatest Nation of All Time: A Political Farce and Time Travel Tragedy” written by Stephen Fruchtman directed by Penney Hulten performed by Justin (Ryn) Griffin, Lindel Hart, Jayse Matrishon, Fae Roberts, and Sandra Wang In the very near future, the world is very nearly out of trees. Armed with encouragement from her late husband, she sets her sights on a possible replacement. “Tennis Play” written by Jeremy Geragotelis directed by Ezekiel Baskin performed by K Adler, Jamie Berger, Drew Chortkoff, Ash Goverman, Lindel Hart, Katie Hertel, Maya Quinones, and Sandra Wang The outrageous and touching happenings at the LGBTQIA+ Tennis League! A play about the mysteries of longing and the corners we are all backed into when we finally grow tired of pushing for the love we think we need.

Get a glimpse into the process of making theater, in this festival of readings of new works in several stages of development. “Jane Austen Ruptured My Spleen” written by James Anthony Merolla directed by Jill Franks performed Liza Manchester and Jayse Matrishon A single modern woman, a former romantic, has been permanently soured, cynically ruined, by the frilly depths, the impossibly romantic notions, breathless whispers, and, ultimately, the empty promises of true love spilled into and out of her sensitive heart via Jane Austen novels she has read 100 times. “Glaucman’s Syndrome” written by Sam Rahman directed by Glenda Cresto performed by Harold Burnett, Jill Franks, Katie Hertel, Simon Huynh, Will Quale, and Nicole Winot Married couple and doctors, Jolie and Scott plan to spend a weekend with Jolie’s brother Trevor, sister-in-law Stephanie, and mother Sally. The political moment gets in the way.
