Four Phantoms turns into a jazz club on Friday 7/31! Both reflective and dynamic, the Periscope Jazz Collective brings entertaining new perspectives to classic jazz standards. Periscope is a flexible jazz band in western Massachusetts; swinging tunes through the many mirrors and lenses of jazz history and improvisation. A special collaboration of Música Franklin and The LAVA Center: Kenyan singer, songwriter and entertainer Atemi Oyungu will be featured at The LAVA Center Tuesday, August 4, 6:00 p.m. Call it Neo-Afro Soul! A mix of neo-soul, Afro-fusion and Afro-Pop, Atemi’s sound has been described as “Miriam Makeba meeting Jill Scott;” she has been called Kenya’s Queen of Soul and Kenya’s own Aretha Franklin. Her surprise appearance in Greenfield is thanks to Orice Jenkins, Executive Director of Música Franklin, who invited her to meet the young people of Música Franklin in their after-school program, and to stay on to offer a special performance at The LAVA Center. Smack Dab Queer Open Mic First Friday of the month Sign-up at 6:30, performances start at 7! Smack Dab Queer Open Mic is a free 18+ LGBTQIA community open mic in Greenfield, MA with the slogan “All genders, all the time.” Your hosts are Jules and Avery. Smack Dab Queer Open Mic is modeled after the now defunct Smack Dab in San Francisco, founded in 2003 by Kirk Read and Larry-bob Roberts at Magnet, the gay men’s health clinic in the Castro. If you’d like to perform at the open mic, please come sign up and bring five to seven minutes of whatever you want to share: stories, poems, a song, dance, your art or, perhaps you’d simply like to join us as audience? A New Blue, formed in 2022 by longtime musical collaborators, brings the rich sound of a full concert band to classic jazz and American popular standards. They’ve performed throughout Western Massachusetts at community spaces, cultural venues, and local events. For the second set, the band will shift into an open jazz jam where others are welcome and encouraged to join. Four Phantoms is a family friendly venue, and we feature a small food menu and a wide variety of beer, cider, mead, and non-alcoholic beverages. This is a free show, but please consider tipping the band and making a purchase in the pub so we can continue to host community events. Thank you!

Any form of art or entertainment that can be staged, in any stage of development. WITH A NEW HOST starting in June: Clara Witty Clara Witty lives in Orange, MA and works as the Programming Director of The LAVA Center. She’s worked on many different projects at The LAVA Center including indiVISIBLE, On the Boards playwright festival, and produced the documentary film “Rising River’s Edge”. She values her community and the arts, and works to bridge them together through her work at The LAVA Center and personal interests. Signup starts at 6:30, show starts at 7. 5 minute limit for each act. You can use our sound system if you’d like audio to backup your act- connect using Bluetooth, plugin using 1/8″ mic jack input, or bring adapter if needed. $1-5 suggested donation

We want to help make Saturday mornings in downtown Greenfield a whole experience. Start at the Greenfield Farmers Market, wander over to Freedom Café for breakfast, grab your food TO GO, find a seat outside and enjoy live music with Josh Hilsdon from 9–11 AM! Josh plays campfire-warmed acoustic Americana with laid-back, soulful vocals and familiar covers you might find yourself singing along to! Our goal is simple: get people downtown. You guys keep talking about how you want people wandering about the side walks, so here ya go!!! Vimana is an experimental rock trio (Brian Rodrigues, bass; Bruce Todd, drums; Leo Hwang, guitar) that mixes equal parts rock, funk, and jazz. They create all original jazz fusion compositions that have a sound that is contemporary but reflects influences from the 1960s and 1970s and weaves together cultural roots from Korea, to Portugal, to America. No cover, but please consider tipping the band and making a purchase in the pub so we can continue to host community events. Thank you!
