Join LAVA for film screenings every 2nd Thursday! Greening Greenfield invites you to the film “Most Likely to Succeed” at LAVA April 9th 6:00 pm (doors open at 5:30). This film is a “thought provoking feature film that reveals the growing shortcomings of conventional education methods in today’s innovative world. The film explores compelling new approaches that aim to revolutionize education as we know it, inspiring school communities to reimagine what school could be. It raises interesting points as it urges Americans to talk about reinventing its education system to meet the demands of the 21st century economy. Our current system—separate grades, separate subjects, memorization—was first designed over a century ago to meet the needs of the Industrial Revolution as a “factory model” of education.. If students can read, write, do basic math and learn about the Louisiana Purchase, they might be ready for a lifetime job on the assembly line. But those jobs are vanishing in the New Economy and the age of super computers. The skills needed in the economy of today (and tomorrow) are so-called “soft skills”—collaboration, experimentation, reflection, social skills—best learned in more student-centered, project-based learning. Imagine students looking forward to the next school day, enjoying…

LAVA and the Historical Society of Greenfield team up to present HSG film screenings “Greenfield’s Winter Carnival, 1923” and “Love’s Young Dream,” with a talkback session to follow with HSG’s Chris Clawson and Carol Aleman. In March of 2024, local history fans and researchers Chris Clawson and Carol Aleman discovered a Pathé News newsreel from just over a hundred years ago. As Clawson recounts it, the forgotten reel from 1923, along with another from a year later, sat on a Historical Society of Greenfield shelf when they suddenly caught his attention. He and Aleman set about researching and restoring the films. “Greenfield’s Winter Carnival, 1923” is a 9-minute film documenting the first Winter Carnival. “Love’s Young Dream” is a one-act comedy-drama which was produced at the old Victoria (later Showplace) Theater on Chapman Street in June 1924, and features local Greenfield actors. Bridging the two films is a short documentary detailing the Historical Society’s discovery, what Chris Clawson and Carol Aleman learned about the films’ creation, and how they produced a modern presentation that was initially screened at the Garden Cinemas in 2024. Each film includes a virtual orchestra accompaniment of silent screen music produced specifically for Vintage Days. Clawson…

Silents Synced pairs classic silent movies with epic rock music. The film will feature Radiohead’s "KID A (2000) / Amnesiac (2001)," paired with F. W. Murnau's NOSFERATU (1923). NOSFERATU X RADIOHEAD is directed and remixed by Josh Frank. Unleashed upon the world in 1922, German filmmaker F.W. Murnau's NOSFERATU is most certainly the most important horror film of the silent era, and one of the first vampire movies. The fact that it exists at all is something of a miracle, as it was almost completely lost when Bram Stoker's widow sued the filmmakers for copyright infringement, and most of the prints of the movie were subsequently destroyed. NOSFERATU tells the story of Hutter and Ellen, a couple from the village of Wisborg. Hutter travels to Transylvania to sell a piece of property in Wisborg to Count Orlok. Hutter stays in Orlok's castle only to learn that the Count is a vampire. Orlok purchases a house next to Hutter's, locks Hutter in the castle and travels to Wisborg. On the way, he manages to possess Hutter's employer and Ellen and strike the village with an outbreak of the plague. Hutter rushes home to stop him before it's too late. CAST: Max…
