4 weeks, 4 themes, and your new year’s writing commitment. Over the course of four weeks, gather to discuss and generate new work with writer L Scully. This workshop will occur Monday evenings in March/April in two hour, limited group sessions at Looky Here. Each week we will explore a different theme through literary and artistic references, group discussion, and generative writing prompts provided live and in session. The ultimate goal of this workshop is to jumpstart your writing practice for the summer in a supportive and productive environment guided by a tapestry of subject matter. Writers Read is a monthly opportunity for an audience to come and listen to local writers in an intimate environment. Each second Wednesday of the month, three writers read from their work, followed by a discussion facilitated by Lindy Whiton, designer of Writers Read. These discussions have been eye opening, touching, and inspiring. Audiences have left the venue ready to write. Avery Cassell is a queer writer and artist. Raised in Iran, they live in a pink haunted house with their rescue cat. Their books include Masculinities, Resistance: The LGBT Fight Against Fascism in WWII; Behrouz Gets Lucky, The Solstice Gift; Burning: Poems for Resistance; Smoldering: Poems of Desire, and the Butch Lesbians Coloring Books. Their current work in progress is their memoir, Look at Me/Don’t Look at Me. Christy Grecsek’s short fiction has been published in several regional magazines and journals. She’s had two non-fiction stories published in Chicken Soup for the Soul collections, one of which was recently featured in their podcast. Three of her short stories placed in contests, including the 2020 Hampshire Life fiction contest, which allowed her to record the winning story in the WHMP/WRSI studio – a true joy. Greening Greenfield introduces the first film in its Fall 2025 series The True Cost shows the shift in how clothes are made today, where they are made, and who makes them. A culture of “fast fashion” has been created by the clothing industry to make styles that change from week to week and are so cheap they’re no longer wash and wear, but wear and throw away. The film takes us to countries where our clothes are made, the materials that are used, and the human and environmental destruction that follows: the true cost of many of the clothes we wear. On Friday, November 14, The LAVA Center in Greenfield will welcome Annie Cheatham to read from her new book, The Baby’s Gotta Have Somethin’: Glimpses of a Southern Childhood. The event will be at 7 pm. All are welcome to this free event. “All of the stories in this book, both fiction and non-fiction, describe places, conditions, and relationships that taught me resilience and gave me courage while I was growing up in the 1950’s South,” Cheatham said. “Unwritten rules about race, class, gender identity, and religion dominated my world, and as a child, I looked for loving people who could guide me to safety. These stories are about a few of those people.” Annie is a retired middle school teacher, speechwriter, co-author with Mary Clare Powell of This Way Daybreak Comes: Women’s Values and the Future, owner of Annie’s Garden Store in Amherst, WHAI’s Greenfield radio host for “The Backyard Gardener,” Executive Director of CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture), and President of the New England Farmers Union. She lives in Conway with her spouse Ann Gibson and two cat sisters found abandoned in a cardboard box in Ashfield.

Come kick off Small Business Saturday with a Free Show of It's A Wonderful Life at the GARDEN. Check out the annual $5 Poster Sale Remember Santa's Favorite Stocking Stuffer is a Greenfield GARDEN Gift Card. George Bailey (James Stewart) has the picture perfect life: a loving wife, Mary (Donna Reed), four young children, and his own business, which he inherited from his father. However, on Christmas Eve, George encounters severe business difficulties at the Bailey Building and Loan. George's Uncle Billy (Thomas Mitchell) loses the cash they owe the bank, which is owned by the Scrooge-esque Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). This leads George to a life crisis, and he contemplates suicide. He's saved at the last moment by the apperance of his guardian angel, Clarence (Henry Travers). Clarence shows George how much his life means by showing him how the world would be without him. It's not pretty; his cheerful, friendly town is dreary and impoverished. Finally, George is convinced and Clarence returns him to the world as if nothing had happened. 4 weeks, 4 themes, and your new year’s writing commitment. Over the course of four weeks, gather to discuss and generate new work with writer L Scully. This workshop will occur Monday evenings in March/April in two hour, limited group sessions at Looky Here. Each week we will explore a different theme through literary and artistic references, group discussion, and generative writing prompts provided live and in session. The ultimate goal of this workshop is to jumpstart your writing practice for the summer in a supportive and productive environment guided by a tapestry of subject matter. The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941) An acerbic critic wreaks havoc when a hip injury forces him to move in indefinitely with a Midwestern family. This Christmas Comedy is perfect to ring in the season. Smack Dab Queer Open Mic is a free 18+ LGBTQIA community open mic in Greenfield, MA with the slogan “All genders, all the time.” Your hosts are Jules and Avery. Smack Dab Queer Open Mic is modeled after the now defunct Smack Dab in San Francisco, founded in 2003 by Kirk Read and Larry-bob Roberts at Magnet, the gay men’s health clinic in the Castro. Since COVID, Stone Soup Café has had to shift from a buffet-style lunch to a fixed, set menu for curbside pickup or delivery.
