Drawing is the backbone of any work on paper. Learning to draw also means learning to see in a way that applies both to drawing and to working with color. This way of seeing is about looking at objects as two-dimensional, related, abstract shapes rather than real objects. This class will teach you how to master drawing through a series of exercises which you can continue to practice at home to develop your skills.

Hieronymus Bosch and the Pieter Bruegel (and many other Netherlandish artists ) used a technique we sometimes call the “mixed technique” because it used both egg and linseed oil. In these classes we will appropriate this technique using acrylic paints for the first layers and oil at the end. The process involves an earth colored ground and working only with lights and darks, an ochre layer, more darks and lights with the goal of achieving a wide range of values.
