Events for May 5, 2025
Langstroth’s Literary Bee
In May, stop by the GPL Local History Room as we celebrate Reverend Lorenzo Langstroth, Greenfield resident and the “Father of Modern Beekeeping”. Langstroth developed the moveable frame beehive, which made it possible to harvest honey and check on the bee's health without destroying the bee hive. When Langstroth wrote his classic book Hive and the Honey-Bee in 1853, he included inspiration from some of the English language’s great poets and playwrights. Langstroth generally quoted a select few lines of poetry or prose, but we have expanded those to show the full context of the material. Think of this as a literary garden, with a Langstroth bee flying among its lines and branches. The self-guided program will be on view in the Local History Room for the month of May.
GPL Zine Club Presents: Making Comics Workshop
Join artist Ashley Jablonski on Monday, May 5 at 6:00 pm, in the Makerspace for a comics workshop! GPL’s Zine Club is an ongoing monthly meeting to learn new zine skills, share your work, and meet other zinesters. Join Ashley in May to learn the basics of writing and illustrating comics, and how to put them into a zine. What’s a zine again? A zine is a DIY, self-published, print work, often on a subject that falls outside of what’s traditionally seen in publishing. This program is free, but space is limited and pre registration is required. Register at: bit.ly/gplzineclub. For more information, contact Jesse Cole at [email protected], or call (413) 772-1544 x5122. This program, generously sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, is free and intended for ages 13 and older.
