Theater of Ideas: A Talk by Vitek Kruta: What Was It Like to Live Under a Communist Dictatorship?

A Talk by Vitek Kruta: On July 17, from 6:00–8:00 PM, artist, author, and historic preservation specialist Vitek Kruta will present a personal account of life under the communist regime in former Czechoslovakia from 1962 to 1981.

Born and raised behind the Iron Curtain, Kruta experienced firsthand the realities of political oppression, censorship, surveillance, and the struggle for personal freedom. As a young artist, musician, performer, and activist, he became involved in the Czech underground movement while studying painting, sculpture, and art restoration. He was also a member of the legendary Czech underground band Psí Vojáci.

His artistic and political activities eventually led him to flee the country and seek asylum in the West. After spending ten years in Germany, where he worked in historic restoration and conservation, Kruta immigrated to the United States to reunite with his father, who had also escaped Czechoslovakia following years of political persecution.

Today, Kruta continues to work as a professional artist, author, and art conservator. Through stories, photographs, music, and personal reflections, he offers a unique perspective on life under dictatorship, the value of freedom, and the enduring power of art and culture as forms of resistance.
