“North by Northwest” is a 1959 action-adventure masterpiece directed by the great Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, and James Mason. The film follows Roger Thornhill (played by Grant), an ordinary ad executive who is mistaken for a government agent and ruthlessly pursued across the country by a mysterious ring of spies. Filmed in VistaVision, the movie features several unforgettable moments—including the suspenseful crop-duster chase and a thrilling climax on Mount Rushmore—all perfectly elevated by Bernard Herrmann’s memorable score. Following its premiere on July 1, 1959, the film became an immediate commercial and critical success. It made its local debut in Greenfield at the Garden Theater on September 16, 1959, where it played for an impressive seven-day run! Today, North by Northwest is widely celebrated as a direct blueprint for the modern James Bond franchise and holds an honored place across multiple AFI milestone lists.
