Greenfield Public Library Presents: “Lost in Space: A Retro Sci-Fi Film Fest

The Greenfield Public Library invites the community to step back in time and explore the thrilling world of 1950s science fiction with its upcoming film festival, “Lost in Space: A Retro Sci-Fi Film Fest!”

From Jan. 13 to Jan 17, GPL will showcase six classic sci-fi films that capture the essence of an era marked by technological advancements, societal anxieties, and the fear of the unknown. These films reflect the societal fears of the 1950s, from alien encounters to advanced technology, mirroring the anxieties of the McCarthy era, the Korean conflict, and the looming Cold War.

The festival lineup includes:

• Monday, 5:30 pm: A spaceship lands in Washington, D.C., capturing the world’s attention. But the alien emissary (Michael Rennie) it brings refuses to reveal his mission to any single government, leaving the military, the politicians, and millions of ordinary people to wait in fear.

• Tuesday, 2:00 pm: Residents of a small town are excited when they see a flaming meteor land in the hills. Their excitement is dampened when they discover it has passengers from Mars aboard.

• Wednesday, 5:30 pm: The far-off star Altair-IV, occupied by two lone inhabitants and Robby the Robot, is visited by a search party from Earth.

• Thursday, 11:00 am: When American reporter Steve Martin investigates a series of mysterious disasters off the coast of Japan, he comes face to face with Godzilla, an ancient creature so powerful and so terrifying, it can reduce Tokyo to a smoldering graveyard.

• Thursday, 2:00 pm: When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks an unsuspecting village and an enormous octopus.
• Friday, 2:00 pm: Plant-like extraterrestrials have invaded Santa Mira, a small town in California, replicating the villagers in giant seed “pods” and taking possession of their souls while they sleep.

The festival, generously sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended. Refreshments will be served.
