Carrie Baker: A History of Women’s Suffrage

Generations of women fought for your rght to vote; now we must defend that vote—and use it! First proposed by the 1848 Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments, women’s demand for the right to vote was controversial—even scandalous in some quarters. Suffragists fought for 72 years to achieve the 19th Amendment in 1920, but astonishingly, women’s voting rights are once again up for debate in some quarters. In this talk, Smith College Professor of American Studies Carrie Baker explains the history and current challenges to women’s voting rights and how women are fighting to maintain our right to vote.
