Basic Book Repair Demonstration with Tom Hutcheson
About This Event
Celebrate National Library Week and William Shakespeare’s birthday by learning to repair books! Join us in the Makerspace on Thursday, April 23 at 3:30 pm for Basic Book Repair with Tom Hutcheson.
Participants will learn the basic forms of book construction (printing, signatures versus perfect bound; text blocks; boards/covers; spines, etc.) and how to address common problems (ripped pages, detached spines, detached covers, etc.). Basic tools and materials will be discussed (leather dressing, glue, bone folders, papers (including washi), boards, rulers, microspatulas, weights/clamps, scalpels, etc.) and their use demonstrated.
Hutcheson comes from a bookish family and has recently retired after careers in municipal management and non-profit policy work. He now has time to attend to some of the books he inherited that need work and is happy to share what he has learned with others.
This program is free, but space is limited to six participants, and registration is required. Register through our calendar at: https://greenfieldpl.libcal.com/event/16460179
