The Greenfield Garden Cinema is participating in Arthouse Convergence’s National Arthouse Theater Day for the second year on July 30th. In hopes to draw in cinephiles to spend a day at the theater, the Garden has specially curated its schedule of films and expanded fifteen independent films to the public on a single day. Only eleven cinemas in New England are participating in the Art House Theater Day, most with only one or two offerings.

With only six theaters participating in Massachusetts, Garden co-owner Isaac Mass says he “felt an obligation to show small films on the big screen.” By dedicating more than three screens the Garden almost doubled the amount of offerings in the Commonwealth. The theater says they show indie films all year but are especially committed to providing counter programming to the blockbuster hit Spiderman Brand New Day opening with early access at the Garden on July 23. Mass explained that the selection was chosen to find something for everyone. Not only is the theater opening its screens to these esoteric titles, but it is dedicating all 3 of its theaters with new luxury recliners to the section.

Art House Theater Day is an annual program of Art House Convergence that brings audiences together to celebrate all that art house theaters and independent films contribute to our cultural landscape: ambitious and innovative art that provokes, challenges, entertains, and inspires. This year’s Art House Theater Day Ambassador is Boots Riley, director of the 2026 art film I Love Boosters. All month movie goers at the Garden will be cajoled by Boots Riley to come to Art House Theater Day. At the Garden Art House Theater Day features back-to-back showings of I Love Boosters and the Boots Riley classic Sorry to Bother You with an all-star cast including Lakeith Stanfield, Danny Glover, Armie Hammer, Terry Crews, Forest Whitaker and Patton Oswalt and Rosario Dawson. Sorry to Bother You will also contain bonus content from Boots Riley himself.

Two Arthouse Theater titles will actually have a full run all week opposite Spiderman Brand New Day, Sony Picture Classics Gail Daughtry Celebrity Sex Pass and Neon’s Her Private Hell. The Garden slate included bring backs of some of the most popular indie titles this year including Focus Features Obsession, A24’s Backrooms Everything Must Go edition and WG Picture’s Our Hero Balthazar. Most of the titles being shown are films the theater did not have room to play previously. Included are Magnolia’s Carolina Caroline, Black Bear’s Tuner, A24’s Mother Mary, Amazon MGM’s God Is God, Vertical’s The Wizard of the Kremlin, Sony Picture Classics’ I Swear, Breakthrough Media’s Cuba After Castro, and A23’s The Gardener.
